Diabetes

Diabetes is an increasingly common disease in our population.  It affects about 8.3 percent of the population, according to the National Diabetes Education Program.  Of those affected, approximately 20% don’t know that they have the disease.  Many people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes later in life, and its onset can be gradual, with diabetes symptoms slowly worsening over time.

Diabetes is caused when we have insufficient insulin produced in our bodies.  This can be for a variety of reasons, including excessive weight, and decreased insulin production.

Diabetes Symptoms:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fruity smelling breath
  • Unexplained agitation and confusion
  • Ketones in the blood (sometimes it will cause urine to smell different)
  • Unexplained urinary tract infections

If you have any of these symptoms, then get your blood sugars checked.  Your doctor may want to perform additional testing to rule out diabetes, or to determine the severity, and type.

Fortunately, with careful monitoring, diet, and medication, the disease can be well controlled.
