Is it Time? How Do I Know When to Get Help for My Aging Parent?

Have you noticed some differences in your loved one but you’re just not sure what it means? Is mom or dad just being quirky or do they need more help in their daily lives? It may be time to ask yourself—how do I know when to get help ?

Signs that may indicate a need for assistance

    • Dry, cracked skin can be a sign of dehydration and malnutrition
    • Changed eating habits – weight loss, lack of food in the home, spoiled food
    • Change in cleanliness and sanitation of the home and increase in clutterFrustrated elderly man. Knowing when to get help for loved ones.
    • Lack of personal hygiene –unpleasant body odor, smell of urine, decline in grooming and personal care
    • Inappropriate behavior – unusual loudness, rudeness, obscenities, unusual withdrawal, extreme mood swings, paranoia, agitation, random calls at odd hours
    • Unexplained bruises, burns, breaks – may indicate a balance and/or vision issue
    • Balance or mobility issues – difficulty walking and getting around the home or getting up from a sitting position
    • Failure to attend once important activities and social events – may indicate depression or loneliness
    • Missed medical appointments
    • Medications not being taken, being mixed up, or running out too quickly
    • Uncertainty or confusion in doing once familiar tasks
    • Losing money, not paying bills or paying twice, unusual purchases
    • Unexplained dents or scratches on their vehicle

  • I’ve learned that as people get older, they don’t like to admit they can’t help themselves anyone. Some are ashamed of not being able to bathe alone, dress alone, and more. These warning signs are super relevant!

      You’ve hit upon a good point. We all like to retain our dignity. It is difficult to realize you can no longer do something you’ve done all your life. That’s why it is important to have a cargiver who is respectful and compassionate as well as technically qualified.
